There is a strong male predominance in fashion photography. With the obvious exception of Annie Leibowitz, few female photographers come to mind. Ellen Von Unwerth is therefore a rare breed in fashion, and even more so for favoring eroticism and sensuality over the grimmasing and gaunt. Her work is almost always unmistakable, from her campaigns with clothing lines like Guess? to her editorials in Vogue and Vanity Fair, the high contrast lighting and perverse subject-matter give the by-line away.
